Are captains still important in Soccer?

With the traditional managers role now being diluted with both technical & sporting directors, does the traditional role as a captain of a football club still carry the burden it used to or is it just to decide which way you shoot from kick off?

Every dressing room has leaders, but traditionally the captain bears the responsibility of representing their team both on and off the field. They are expected to lead by example by demonstrating good sportsmanship, commitment, and dedication to the team.

The captain would normally play a crucial role in fostering team unity, motivating their teammates, and communicating effectively with both players and coaches.

On the field, the captain often serves as the team's spokesperson, interacting with match officials, although unlike rugby everyone seems to get involved. This is sometimes tactical to try and influence the referee but often sets a bad example for younger viewers. There are talks of following suit with rugby and just allowing captains to speak to the referee. Even as just a trial that will be a step in the right direction.

What we don’t see from modern day captains is making tactical decisions, although they should try to organise the team during gameplay.

Off the field, the captain is responsible for upholding the team's values and standards, as well as being an ambassador for the team in the community. Overall, the soccer captain's role is one of leadership, influence, and responsibility.

In the modern game I think there are two types of captain, or should I say I think captains are chosen based on the characteristics of either of the below:

  1. A player who shows leadership vocally

  2. A player who shows leadership through their ability and actions

Now ideally you’d want a player that falls into both categories, but let’s take a look at modern examples of either category. Manchester United is probably a good example, a club that looks like it lacks real leadership on the field. Harry Maguire would be example 1 and Bruno Fernandes example 2.

Harry Maguire falls into category 1 because he isn’t necessarily the best player in the team, but he organises well and demands the right standards from those around him. Where as Bruno doesn’t display the traditional characteristics of a captain but can change a game in an instant with his ability. Ronaldo and Messi are other examples of this type of captain. John Terry being both in my opinion.

In summary I think there’s a still a place in the modern game for a good captain, they certainly still have influence but we are seeing more and more category 2 type captains, the armband being given to the best player.
